One of the most frequently asked questions I get from my clients during the initial wedding planning process is how to choose a wedding videographer.
Let me start my saying that I love videography! I truly believe that wedding photography and videography can go hand in hand, and together they can make up for some truly amazing wedding coverage. While our job is to deliver the beautiful story of your wedding day in photos, wedding videography adds that special touch to your wedding day memories. Think the song that was playing during your first dance or your grandfather’s wise and heartfelt speech. I also love it when wedding videographers send us their final video from a big day, where I can see how much we inspired each other. Working with wedding videographers can be super fun and we always bounce ideas off of each other. In the end, our mutual goal is to make our couples happy, and we always keep that in mind when communicating with each other on the wedding day.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure to work with dozens of very talented wedding videographers, and my experience enables me to have an insider scoop on their work style and videography approach. I’ve decided to blog the advice I’ve given my clients in hopes that this can help all brides and grooms to be to choose the very best wedding videographer for their needs.
- Choose a wedding videographer that has a style you like
Like in wedding photography, some wedding videographers are more hands on and have a direct approach. They will be involved in posing couples and directing them to the video locations they love. If you feel like you will benefit from a more direct approach, look for a videographer whose work is more in this style.
On the other side of the spectrum, some videographers are less direct and are more journalistic. These videographers focus on candid moments and are less involved in directing their couple’s actions. If you love the candid style in both photography and videography, candid wedding videographers might be a good choice for you.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you might want to choose a wedding videographer who has a similar style to your chosen wedding photographer. This will make both of their work easier on the day of your wedding since there are not going to be any workflow issues. The result is flawless photography and videography coverage that is beautiful, cohesive and complete.
- Finalize a wedding day timeline that works well for both your wedding photographer and a videographer.
Having a timeline that takes into account both photographer’s and videographer’s needs is so key! Timelines are important not only because they make the day run smoothly, but also because they allow you to get the MOST out of your photography AND videography time. If you decided to have a photographer and a videographer during your getting ready and creative sections of the day, make sure you are allocating more time in order to give everyone an opportunity to do their job. Often, a videographer will ask you to repeat the actions you just did for a photographer, like putting on a dress or a bow tie, so they could record a video of it from the best possible angle.
In addition, as creatives, we all get excited when working with you, and we all have some sort of a mood board or a game plan. Therefore, often times wedding videographers ask us for some time alone with the couple during their creative section, so they could work their magic, and vice versa! That is why it is very important to allocate some extra time during your bride and groom portraits when you’re working with both a wedding photographer and videographer.
- Seek out referrals
Your wedding photographer and a wedding planner can recommend someone they have worked well with in the past! It’s always flattering when my couples ask me for vendor recommendations as it shows that they trust me and value my opinion. Your wedding planners can also give you suggestions on local vendors based on your personal style and taste.
